Homeowners urged to prioritize grill safety as July 4 approaches [Video]

TOPEKA, Kan. (KCTV) – With the heat of summer blanketing the Kansas City metro and July 4th just around the corner, homeowners have been urged to prioritize grill safety.

The Kansas Department of Insurance says that with the Fourth of July just around the corner, it wanted to remind homeowners to prioritize grill safety when firing it up outdoors.

The U.S. Fire Administration reported that there are about 5,700 grill fires which cost around $37 million each year.

“A grill fire can quickly turn into a devastating house fire, so taking a few precautions can help ensure a safe and enjoyable holiday for everyone,” said Insurance Commissioner Vicki Schmidt.

The Department has suggested residents follow these safety tips to prevent grill fires this summer:

• Maintain your grill – Before each use, check for leaks or loose connections in the propane hose. Clean all grease buildup from the grill and surrounding areas.
