Inclusive Media Coverage in Times of Crisis (with subtitles) I UNESCO Master Class Video 4

In times of crisis or natural disaster, persons with disabilities often face major challenges – and inclusive reporting that conveys the necessary information can be a matter of life and death.

Video #4 of UNESCO Master Class on Disability Equality in the Media covers inclusive, relevant, and accessible programming in situations of crisis, displacement, natural disasters, and environmental emergencies. Often, the rights and information needs of audiences with disabilities are not prioritized, and life-saving content is generalized. This session highlights the importance of the media focusing on removing barriers for persons with disabilities and providing them with relevant information. This is vital as crisis situations can lead to a rapid increase in the number of injuries, as well as a quick escalation in violence and discrimination against girls and women with disabilities.

The Master Class Video Series on Disability Equality in the Media, hosted by Sophie Morgan, is a global initiative launched by UNESCO to strengthen the capacity of media organizations to integrate the principles of diversity, inclusion and accessibility into editorial policies and media programming, content production, and management practices.
