The statistics put it in perspective. According to the Department of Transportation’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration:
- In 2021, 538 people died in crashes over the July 4th holiday
- 39% of those deaths were people driving drunk
Officials say nighttime hours are especially dangerous.
There’s also a financial toll. Based on 2019 numbers, the most recent year for which cost data is available, crashes involving impaired drivers cost the United States $58 billion annually.
So local officials want you to remember that drinking and driving is a risk no one should take.
Plan ahead. Designate a sober driver to get you home safely.
