Remembering fire safety after tragedy [Video]

MADISON, Wis. (WMTV) – After six family members died in a home fire in Juneau County on Sunday, officials are reminding Wisconsinites of some preventative fire safety steps they can take.

WMTV 15 asked several agencies, including the State Fire Marshal, the Necedah Fire Department and the Town of Necedah, whether or not there were smoke detectors and if they were working at the time of the house fire, but did not receive confirmation yet. WMTV 15 also requested the latest building inspection reports of the home in Necedah.

Wisconsin state law dictates most residential buildings need smoke detectors in the basement, at the stairway of each floor level and in each sleeping area or within six feet of where you’re sleeping.

“It’s very critical you have working smoke alarms,” Bill Sullivan, the fire marshal for Madison Police Department said.

Hot gases rise, so smoke detectors have to be within a foot of the ceiling or mounted on the ceiling, Sullivan explained.
